Tribune Reporters Fatehgarh Sahib, July 11 The district administration has chalked out a comprehensive plan to make Mandi Gobindgarh pollution-free. This was stated by Kanwalpreet Brar, Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, while presiding over a meeting of district officials and the pollution control board here on Tuesday. The DC said there were 102 induction furnaces in the town, of which 60 were in operation while 28 have upgraded their air pollution devices. Six furnaces have been directed to immediately install new devices. She said there were 342 rolling mills, of which 245 were operational. All rolling mills have installed energy saving devices. She directed officials of the pollution control board to collect samples regularly. The DC directed the municipal council and the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board to expedite the work regarding the installation of a sewage treatment plant. She also directed IRM Energy Private Limited to supply CNG to the rolling mills and forging units through the gas pipeline, being laid by the Gas Authority of India. She also directed officials of the National Highway Authority to clean the drains on both sides of the GT Road. She said the Chief Minister wanted to make the town pollution-free and the administration was making all efforts in this direction. Other directions Six furnaces have been directed to immediately install new devices. The DC directed the municipal council and the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board to expedite the work regarding the installation of a sewage treatment plant. Brar, who was holding a meeting with executive officers of the municipal council and those of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, said the officials should ensure that the ban on plastic bags be strictly implemented. Concerned over an increase in the pollution level, Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Kaur Brar directed the Industries Centre, Mandi Gobindgarh, to plant 1,000 saplings in the town. Brar, who was holding a meeting with executive officers of the municipal council and those of the Punjab Pollution Control Board, said the officials should ensure that the ban on plastic bags be strictly implemented. She said 70 kg of plastic bags were seized during a surprise raid at Sirhind markets recently. The DC also told the National Highway of India (NHAI) to ensure the cleaning of drains on both sides of the highway to restrict the spread of diseases during the rainy season. She also directed the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board to ensure the use of water released from the sewerage treatment plant for irrigation and construction purposes. The plant will start functioning from July 31.
